I went jogging on Monday night, pleased with myself because I live in a small town and it's safe to jog at night. The residential streets were quiet, the stars sharp and crisp in the sky. The air was clean and it felt good to watch the world pass me by under the cover of night.

The next day I decided to drive my previous night's jogging rout to see how many miles I had gone. As I took the first turn into an elderly residential area I notice a lot of police cars parked along the side of the road. A lot. There were three K-9 units, four cop cars here, a few more over there, but no sign of the police. Until I turned the corner.

It was like a sudden flash out of a movie. Two cops where crouched behind their open car doors. One cop had his assault rifle trained on a clean shaven, normal looking, middle aged white guy. The guy had his back turned to the cops and both of his hands in the air. The other cop has his hand on his gun, ready to pull it at any moment.

I stomped on the breaks and jolted to a stop. One of the cops waved me away. I didn't need any encouragement. Whatever was going on I definitely did not want to be part of it. I threw my car into reverse and got out of there. Well, not really out of there. I drove around the corner to my house, parked and went inside.

I was a little shell shocked. Here I was thinking my neighborhood was so nice and safe. I was only one road away from a scene that required a cop to pull out a massively humongous gun... and I had been jogging on that street just the night before.

That's a little too close for comfort.
