the airport

I'm having a moment of appreciating the Portland Airport. I'm sitting in the terminal here on free wi-fi, listening to live piano music. The music is beautiful; reminiscent of the haunting tunes from the Lord of the Rings movie.

Yes, there are many reasons I hate airports, but sometimes I appreciate the cacophony of humanity that find themselves thrown together for a few hours (or a few days). There's a randomness to it... and yet an order and beauty. There's a shared experience in being stuck in a confined space, hurtling through the sky at hundreds of miles an hour. There are unexpected conversation, unusual experiences. It can be unexpected in its awfulness, but just as unexpected in its reward.

It's obvious I haven't traveled in a while. I feel reminiscent... like I'm meeting an old friend and I'm saying, Oh you again. I've been wondering where you've been.

Off to catch my flight to San Diego and then on to Tijuana.

UPDATE: So my flight is delayed because the pilot's chair is broken. Seems like a spring sprung and then broke. Wow. Never heard of that one before. I guess a broken spring means the pilot's chair can move... which means he could lose control of the um.. the controls. Which means we could all die. Because of a broken spring. In a chair. I'll have to ask my pilot brother if it's really that big of a deal or if the pilot is just wanting to avoid a sore bum.

Which reminds me of other reasons my flights have been delayed. On an international flight out of Minneapolis/St. Paul three years ago, they found an unclaimed bag on board after they had loaded us all in. They didn't want to tell us much, you know, to avoid mass hysteria and panic, but they called the bomb squad and had the bomb-sniffer-dog come on and do his sniffer-dog thing.

Turns out it was a bag left by a mechanic who was fixing something earlier. Three hours trapped on a plane going nowhere before a seven hour flight to Europe = not my favorite thing. But I was happy to not be exploded... so I didn't mind that much.

Oh good. They're boarding the flight. So here's to actually leaving....

I was in San Diego this morning! We could have rondevued. I can't spell that word. Oh, are you going to Costa Rica? I suppose I could text you that question, but I'm rambling in your comment section instead. That's all. Goodnight. ;)
